About the project

The World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF) Continuous Update Project (CUP) is a programme that analyses global research to produce at least two high quality and up-to-date systematic reviews of diet, nutrition, and physical activity and cancer a year. This is a work and time intensive task with scope for several improvements in the integration of tools in the pipeline and the automation of tasks.

The “Automating WCRF CUP processes” project is aimed at developing a user interface (“TEACUP”) to streamline searches and management of articles, as well as development of methods to automate article screening and inclusion, and semi-automation of data extraction and assessment of risk of bias.

Work packages

This project conists of 5 work packages led by research teams at University of Bristol (UoB) and Imperial College London (ICL):

  1. Development of a user interface (“TEACUP”), led by ICL

  2. Automation of article exclusion and/or prioritization, led by UoB

  3. Semi-automation of data extraction and validation, led by UoB

  4. Semi-automation of risk of bias assessment, led by UoB

  5. Testing and validation of TEACUP and algorithms, led by ICL
